Activity: Create a visualization

• Groups of 2-3
• Select a lightweight data visualization tool (ex. Datawrapper or RAWGraphs)
• Provide a clean, interesting dataset (ex. Excerpt of the NYC Squirrel Census, Seattle Cultural Space Inventory, etc.)
• Walk through some basics of the tool
• In small groups, create a visualization (20-30 minutes). Share out with the rest of the session attendees.
• Discussion questions:
  • Why did you choose the chart that you used?
  • What were some of the challenges you encountered when visualizing this data?

• 45 minutes

Tools/materials required

• Simple visualization software (recommended: browser-based)
• Simple, interesting dataset
• Computers for each participant or group
• If virtual, breakout rooms for groups
